How did you join the board/become a pod captain?
I joined the Cottage community in 2013, with my eldest child who now attends elementary school. Our family served on the classroom readiness pod and the admissions pod before I was asked to serve as the admissions pod captain. The next year, I was asked to serve as the Vice President.
Tell us briefly what your main responsibilities are as a pod captain.
The Vice President’s job is to oversee the volunteer work force, ensuring that all the necessary volunteer work of the school gets done. This includes: job placement, board development, board training, managing pod captains, routine updates, board reports, and resolving any pod related problems or issues. The VP presides for the President should she/he be unavailable.
What has been most surprising thing you've learned as a co-op member/pod captain/board member?
Being on the board has taught me so much about working with a volunteer workforce. Clear communication and follow through are essential. I hope people realize how essential their efforts are to the functioning of the school. If someone isn't pulling their weight, it falls to another parent to pick up the slack.
Is there anything you feel especially proud of accomplishing in your position?
This has certainly been a year full of unexpected developments. I'm proud of all the work the board has accomplished in in keeping our school thriving.
